Creating the Match Girl...Research and Development in the Forest of Dreams

Jade, Hester and Michala get to grips with welly dancing

Research and development… what’s that all about?

Lashings of homemade soup, a cabin in the woods, projections, bundles of newspaper and sets of dancing wellies all added together for four days of pre-rehearsal explorations in the Forest of Dean.

We retreated here to look at the different devices we could use to tell this story and the textures and flavours of each section. The sum of this means we have tapped into a Mary Poppins mixture of magical and imaginative tale telling of this wonderful story.

Composer Seamus Carey joins in the puppeteering!
Throughout this time we focused on the experience of our audience breaking down some conservative conventions of watching a play and encouraging our audience to eat and play along with us.

Here’s a few pictures – have a browse and you’re not too early to book your tickets too!

Just email tickets@thewardrobetheatre.com to reserve your tickets and pick them up 25 mins before the show.
